🌟 What is AI?

Stay with us for these few, short paragraphs - we promise not to get too academic or techie on you. In your journey to understand and effectively use Artificial intelligence (AI) in HR , knowing the basics of how it works is a great foundation to your learning.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a field within computer science dedicated to developing intelligent machines capable of: 

• Learning

• Problem-solving

• Decision-making

• Comprehending natural language

The goal is the replication of human intelligence in computer systems through programming, enabling them to think and learn in a similar way to humans. 

You will notice that we highlighted some words:

• Replication of human intelligence through programming:

  • Keep in mind that AI still requires humans to program it.

  • Don’t believe the science fiction that computers are programming themselves. We are not there yet (and likely won’t be for quite a few years).

• Think and learn like humans:

  • THIS is what we have gotten really good at lately - programming computers to think and learn like we do.

While there are many types of AI, generative AI (GenAI) is the one that took the world by storm when OpenAI released ChatGPT in December, 2022.

GenAI takes unstructured data from various sources and creates new content based on advanced mathematical algorithms. It is a powerful technology that enables machines to create content autonomously using neural networks, like our human brain. 💥

Like humans, GenAI has flaws such as potential biases, security leaks, and it can “hallucinate”, which means that it presents a false or misleading output that does not seem to be justified by its training data.

These issues are not a reason to avoid GenAI.

Instead, it makes a stronger case to better understand it.

😲 Aha! Moments

We human beings have been communicating with each other for millennia. We use words, body language, and actions to get our point across. And since we have so much practice, we are awesome at it, aren’t we? 🧐

GenAI systems use Natural Language Processing, which means they can converse with us using our language. Before this, you had to hire programmers to instruct the computer to do what you wanted. We HR professionals know how that usually turns out, right?

Now, we can do something no one in history has been able to do before:

We can directly tell the computer

what we want in our own words without

having to translate it into computer code!!

That was one of the biggest Aha! Moments for me. GenAI is much more powerful than any previous connection we have had to computers. This is why we want you to learn how to harness its full power and potential.

Considering our track record as humans who have had limited success in conversing and understanding each other, what in the world are we going to do when we now throw an unemotional, non-sentient computer into the mix?

Don’t believe us? Think of how many times you, a human, have tried to understand tone from a text message or email sent by another human via a computer. Since we have such a difficult time using computers to talk to and understand each other, how does that look when a human is now talking directly to a computer? And the computer is “talking” back to us? 😮

This is the challenge and we are going to figure it out, together.

So how do you learn to talk with a computer using your language?

You are going to experience many ways of conversing with GenAI over the next few years. You may talk with it directly in tools like ChatGPT, Bard, or Claude.

In addition, you are going to discover many “AI Insight” tools built into your favorite software like:

• Canva

• Adobe Sensei GenAI

• Salesforce Artificial Intelligence

• SAP SuccessFactors HXM

• Google Docs

• Microsoft PowerPoint

Even Volkswagen is adding a ChatGPT interface to its cars! 🙀

No matter which tool you use, you will need to develop the skills and abilities to use your language in ways that you have never done before.

Learning how to communicate with a computer who speaks your language will require specific techniques.

In our next issues, we will cover many of those techniques, starting with how crafting an effective GenAI prompt is not much different than cooking a gourmet meal from a recipe. 🍛
